BernCo's Animal Care and Resource Center

Animal Shelter Rendering
The new BernCo Animal Care and Resource Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays with adoptions from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center will be closed on Sundays, Mondays and all Bernalillo County holidays.

Due to President Trump’s visit to the Albuquerque area on Monday the United States Secret Service is closing several downtown buildings. Various county offices will close at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 16 and will not reopen until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Bernalillo County Open Space and Cottonwood Gulch Explorations are hosting Fall Family Fun Days every Sunday through November, noon – 5 p.m. at Bachechi Open Space, 9521 Rio Grande Boulevard NW.

On Sunday, Sept. 15, all of Bernalillo County’s information technology systems will be offline from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to implement a major network upgrade in preparation for the county’s move to new headquarters at Alvarado Square in 2021. During that time, all IT systems, including most phones, email, and many functions on BernCo.gov, will be unavailable. Emergency 911 communication will not be impacted.

On Sept. 10 the County Commission voted to authorize the county manager to accept $384,190 from the State of New Mexico Enhanced 911 Fund to purchase new 911 dispatch consoles for the Bernalillo County Emergency Communications Department. These consoles hold the radio equipment, several video monitors and the computer needed to help dispatchers keep track of the original 911 call, the dispatch of law enforcement, fire/rescue personnel, ambulance/hospital and other community partners (Red Cross, PNM, Gas Company) who might become part of the call.

Bernalillo County Fire and Rescue, under the leadership of Fire Chief Greg Perez, is working to achieve the highest level of professionalism and efficiency on behalf of those it serves. Recently, the department began an international accreditation process facilitated by the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE).

County Commissioner Charlene Pyskoty is hosting the East Mountain Celebration on Sunday, Sept. 22 from noon to 5 p.m. at Los Vecinos Community Center. This free outdoor event includes entertainment, jumpers, a zip line, games, food trucks and, for the first time, a wine and beer garden.

The Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center rabies clinic time and day will be changed from Tuesdays from 1 – 2 p.m. to Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The start date for this change is Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019. The cost is $10 per animal (dogs and cats) for a one year vaccination.

On Aug. 20 the BernCo Commission approved a paid time off ordinance that will mandate business owners in the unincorporated areas of the county, with two or more employees, to provide paid leave. The ordinance will take effect on July 1, 2020.

Bernalillo County residents can register now for fall and winter sports leagues, including adult fall softball and youth winter basketball.

On Saturday, Aug. 17, BernCo Commissioner Quezada and City Councilor Peña hosted the grand opening of the County Behavioral Health Initiative (BHI) funded Peer Drop-In Center.

The community within Bernalillo County has joined efforts to clean the community’s streets of needles and syringes, to make Bernalillo County a safe place to work and play. Since the advent of these efforts, over 13,000 needles have been reported and picked-up by various organizations including volunteers, city, and county workers.

South Valley MainStreet and Bernalillo County host La Familia Growers’ Market every Friday, at 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park, 100 Isleta Boulevard SW. The La Familia Growers’ Market at Dolores Huerta Park returns for its sixth year. Local growers and independent artisans will be offering their fresh and unique creations each week.

Did you know Bernalillo County has instituted a ban on the use of glyphosate? County efforts to maintain weed growth include large-scale machine mowing and the traditional hand tools and pulling methods.
Residents need to be aware that weed growth on their own property, including the setback area (that portion of public land along the road between the private property line and the curb or pavement that is driven by automotive traffic, Bernalillo County Code Section 66-225 (c)), needs to be maintained by the residents themselves.

Lobo Little League in Albuquerque is the only little league in the State of New Mexico that hosts "Challenger Baseball,"an adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. The program was recently honored by Bernalillo County Commission. In the Challenger Division, coaches, parents, and volunteers from across Bernalillo County devote countless hours to giving children with all levels of ability the opportunity to play youth baseball on a real team.
