Bernalillo County is building a new Animal Care and Resource Center to better serve the public with animal rescue and adoptions, educational and training classes for people and animals, spay and neuter programs, and support services.

national voter registration day
In honor of National Voter Registration Day, Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover is hosting the Second Annual Be the Vote Voter Registration Drive Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018 at Civic Plaza, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. County Clerk Stover is calling on members of our community to Celebrate National Voter Registration Day by coming out to register to vote, or update their voter registration for the Nov. 6 general election. Staff members will be on hand to answer any questions.
east mountain celebration
Commissioner James Smith welcomes the community to the 2018 East Mountain Celebration, Sunday, Sept. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. at Los Vecinos Community Cente in Tijeras. This year, Bernalillo County is honoring five outstanding citizens who have spent multiple years volunteering in the East Mountains. Enjoy free music from two great local bands, Paul Pino and the Tone Daddies Band and the Rockamatics Band. This is a family-friendly event and kids can enjoy free activities like face painting, fun jumps and more. Chow down on goodies from fantastic food vendors. Entertainment includes dance and cheer teams, plus there will be a car show and information booths.

Bernalillo County, in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services and Daniels Family Funeral Services, will thank Valley High School students who built urns for unclaimed veterans who will be interred in Santa Fe on Oct. 4.
suicide awareness healing fair
As part of suicide awareness month, Bernalillo County Community Services and the State Children Youth & Families Department will host a suicide awareness healing fair on Saturday, Sept. 22 at South Valley Multipurpose Center from 2-6 p.m. The fair will be an opportunity for the community to learn about local resources for those affected by suicide.
sugar skull run registration open
Registration is now open for the 5th Annual BernCo Sugar Skull Fun Run. The Dia de los Muertos-themed race will take place on Sunday, Oct. 28 and begins at 9:30 a.m. at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Participants can register for the 5k or 10k fun runs. The race route will follow the Bosque Trail south toward Rio Bravo Boulevard. Walkers and pets are also welcome to participate. Register online today at www.BernCo.gov/RunBernCo.
absentee ballot requests accepted now
County Clerk Linda Stover wants to remind voters that absentee applications are currently being accepted for the Nov. 6, 2018 general election. Absentee applications can be completed online at nmvote.org, or requested by calling 243-VOTE (8683). Absentee ballots will be sent out starting on Tuesday, Oct. 9 and will continue to be sent until Friday, Nov. 2.
commission supports medicaid buy in option
Bernalillo County Commissioners gave their approval to a resolution backing more affordable health care for uninsured New Mexicans through a Medicaid buy-in plan. The resolution, sponsored by Commission Chair, Steven Michael Quezada, will be sent to the state legislature and governor in support of a public option buy-in for health care coverage under the Medicaid program.
new union contract for YSC employees
The Bernalillo County Commission has approved a new contract with the Association of Federal, State, County and Municipal Employees, the union representing Bernalillo County’s Youth Services Center employees. Under the new agreement, AFSCME represented employees will receive a one-time payout of $2,000.

Bernalillo County, in conjunction with Daniels Family Funeral Services, will honor Bernalillo County unclaimed and indigent residents with a public memorial burial ceremony later this month. Click the story for a link to the list of decedents.

All Bernalillo County pools will close on Aug. 12 for the summer season. However, special swim days are available at select pools and for party rentals. Click the story for details.
