MDC McClendon Lawsuit Progress
Bernalillo County officials are excited to announce significant progress in the county’s efforts to resolve the requirements of the 1995 McClendon vs. City of Albuquerque lawsuit. This lawsuit was filed in regards to conditions at the former Bernalillo County Detention Center, which was operated by the City of Albuquerque at the time. The lawsuit outlines 253 requirements for MDC to reach compliance on. The requirements are broken down into domains, focusing on mental health, medical services and jail operations. MDC is currently 59.7 percent compliant, a nearly doubled increase from the 2017 rating of 34.3 percent.
assessor veteran's outreach
This is the second year Bernalillo County Assessor Tanya R. Giddings has partnered with the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (NMDVS) to host a series of veteran outreach events at the BernCo Assessor’s Office located downtown at 501 Tijeras NW. The third outreach event is on Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the fourth and final event is on March 21.
south valley pride day nominations open
Bernalillo County has opened nominations for this year’s South Valley Pride Day Outstanding Citizens Award, which honors community members for their dedication and community service to improve County Commission District 2. Recipients of the award will be celebrated as outstanding role models during the annual parade and honored at a formal ceremony April 28 at Westside Community Center as part of South Valley Pride Day 2019.

clerk's office wins award
The Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office has received a 2018 “Clearie” Award for Recruiting, Training and Retaining Election Workers. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s (EAC) Annual “Clearie” Awards recognize outstanding innovations in elections, and best practices in accessibility and recruiting, training and retaining of election workers. The Clerk’s Office received the award for a new election worker training program called “Learn the Vote.”
flood reduction
Almost 300 South Valley property owners will be receiving letters this week notifying them of the change in their flood zone status. For the properties removed from the floodplain, mandatory flood insurance will no longer be required for federally backed mortgages and that means a savings to those property owners.
de anza lodge money approved
The Bernalillo County Commission approved a Local Economic Development Agreement with Anthea at Nob Hill to redevelop the historic De Anza Motor Lodge. Anthea at Nob Hill requested a $350,000 LEDA increment grant from the county to assist in the redevelopment of the property at Washington and Central Avenue in southeast Albuquerque. The monies will be used for new infrastructure for a 40-unit boutique hotel utilizing both short and long-term stay capacities.

Bernalillo County Treasurer Nancy M. Bearce announced the 2019 fiscal year (FY19) quarterly results at the Feb. 12 Bernalillo County Board of Finance meeting.

Bernalillo County Parks & Recreation Open Space is hosting a community meeting to update plans for the former Sandia Ranch property on north Edith Boulevard. The county acquired the property in 2015 and is seeking input and feedback on potential future county uses of the property.

Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins would like to invite you to her next monthly neighborhood luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 20, noon-1:00 p.m. at McKinley Community Center, 3401 Monroe NE. The speakers this month are Charmaine Gutierrez, City of Albuquerque Program Manager-Supper Meals, and Ruth Rosenstein, Owner-Rhubarb and Elliot.
culture of hope event
Bernalillo County is hosting the Soul, Science and Culture of HOPE, a 2.5-hour event exploring how communities can help youth succeed with hope, on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the South Valley Multipurpose Senior Center. The event includes a networking opportunity and a discussion about the culture of hope, and how families, schools and youth-organizations can use hope for the success of all children. Admission is free, but preregistration is required.

County Clerk Linda Stover reports that 100 percent of the ballots in the Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) Mail-in Election have been counted and the unofficial results are available.

On Nov. 14, 2018, BernCo Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada and the Bernalillo County Arts Board held a ribbon-cutting of “Vecinos,” a sculpture by Mark Horst and Working Classroom at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park. The profiles of the 10 South Valley citizens featured in the sculpture will be repainted in a different color scheme up to twice a year.

Learn about the property tax saving programs available to you as a veteran or a surviving spouse. Two types of veterans' exemptions are available: Service related exemption which gives a $4,000 reduction in taxable value of the property. 100 percent disabled exemption that relieves the veteran of all property taxes owed on their primary residence.
