Be Aware of Motorcycles On Our Roads, Says BernCo Board

05/08/2018

The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim May 2018 as Motorcycle Awareness Month and urges our citizens to be observant, courteous and knowledgeable about the growing number of motorcycles on our roadways in order to help prevent accidents and most importantly, save lives.

Motorcycles are used as a regular means of transportation for commuting, touring and recreation in and around Bernalillo County.

The weather and scenic roadways of Bernalillo County make motor riding a very popular mode of transportation for locals and riders from around the country.

The safe operation of a motorcycle requires the use of acquired skills developed through a combination of training and experience, the use of good judgement, and thorough knowledge of traffic laws and licensing requirements.

Riding practices and cooperation from all road users will reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our highways, and by raising awareness, both drivers and riders will be safer while sharing the road.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled since 1997 with a total of 4,976 motorcycle fatalities reported in 2016, accounting for 13 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths. Motorcyclist deaths occur twenty-nine times more frequently than fatalities in other vehicles.

Statistically, 61 percent of drivers and 44 percent of passengers fatally injured in a motorcycle crash were wearing a helmet and 58 percent of motorcyclist deaths occur between May and September.

It is imperative that the residents of Bernalillo County be aware, show consideration and share the road with motorcycles on the streets and highways and recognize the importance of motorcycle safety.
