American Legion Post 13 Team Recognized by County Commission

09/10/2019

At its Sept. 10 administrative meeting, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners recognized the Albuquerque Post 13 American Legion baseball team for its outstanding season by reaching the American Legion World Series.

The team members are: Seth Casias, Damien Roddy, Benito Garcia, Eliazar Torres, Javier Cera-Almager, Roy Lee Jennings IV, Isaiah Gonzales, Brent Rigtrup, Brandon Bagon, Tyler Wilson, Steven Romero, and Marquez Prince Munoz. The team was led by head coach Danny Gonzales, and assistant coaches Daniel Gonzales, Andrew Gonzalez and Eddie Marin.

The 13 team members of Albuquerque Post 13 consider themselves to be more than just a team, and refer to themselves affectionately as “primos.” They went into the American Legion State Championships with a win-loss record of 20–1 and won four straight games to advance to the Region 8 American Legion Western Championships, held in Fairfield, Calif.

Albuquerque Post 13 succeeded with great effort, losing the first game and winning five more games to prevail as Region 8 American Legion Western Champions with a 25-2 season, qualifying into the 100th American Legion World Series held in Shelby, N.C., and making them the first ever New Mexico team to qualify and play in the American Legion World Series, televised nationwide on ESPN.

Albuquerque Post 13 competed with class amidst adversity from the get-go with stolen uniforms, injuries, emergency room visits, roster protests, and even delayed flights.

Congratulations to the coaches and the entire team for their outstanding performance and for making history; it is fitting to also recognize the players’ parents and families as a whole for supporting local baseball.
