Youth Services Center

The Reducing Racial And Ethnic Disparities Committee is a subcommittee of the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) Steering Committee in Bernalillo County.  

The Bernalillo County Youth Services Center is a National Model Site for Juvenile Justice Reform and the Annie E Casey Foundation. 

Its goal is to develop a different and more meaningful relationship between the community and the systems members, in order to identify and reduce racial and ethnic disparities in the juvenile justice system.

Members will: 

  • Listen and learn about racial and ethnic disparity
  • Learn about the Juvenile Justice System
  • Develop new levels of cultural competence
  • Support the strengths of the community
  • Work on community identified and community driven projects
  • Brainstorm ways to bridge systems gaps between the families in the community and the systems processes and staff
  • Understand the role of family engagement in a youth’s success
  • Understand the importance of building community capacity to serve children in their own families and their own communities
  • Attend both RRED and PMAC (La Plazita Institute) meetings if possible
