Ribbon-cutting Ceremony for Second “Hoop Garden” Greenhouse at Bernalillo County Youth Services Center

On April 22, 2016,  Bernalillo County Commissioner Debbie O’Malley and the Youth Services Center invited the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new greenhouse on the east campus of the center outside the secure perimeter of the juvenile detention facility.

The hoop garden was officially dedicated in a ceremony on Earth Day, April 22, at 11:30 a.m. at the East Campus of the Youth Services Center Complex, 5100 Second St. NW. (Story continues below).

The greenhouse will allow youth in community-based supervision programs who are not being held in the detention center to continue working in the farming program after their release from the facility while they are awaiting trial.

“This gardening program has allowed these young people to learn how the food they eat gets to their table,” says County Commissioner Debbie O’Malley.

La Cocina Verde (“The Green Kitchen”) is a collaborative effort among the Youth Services Center, Albuquerque Public Schools, the Bernalillo County Extension Office, La Plazita, NMSU, Farm to Table, and the national Food Corps program.

The first greenhouse was built within the secure perimeter of the detention center in October of 2014 and has since grown into a program that is fully integrated into the residents’ daily program schedule.

The public is asked to consider donating any of the following items for use in both of the greenhouse hoop gardens:

Tomato racks, hoses, rain water barrels, baskets, fertilizer, work station tables (or wood to make them), Miracle Gro®, weed whacker, water containers, blood meal, bone meal, irrigation tools, hand tools, gloves: small, medium, large, x-large, gardening tools such as: shovels, rakes, hoes     water wands, water hose sprayers, wagons, rototiller, sun block, hats, vegetable seeds, fruit seeds, herb plants, gardening books, garbage bags
