Blue Portal Congratulated on 41st Year

At its Nov. 12 administrative meeting the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners congratulated the Blue Portal on its 41st birthday and commended the Assistance League of Albuquerque for creating, maintaining and growing this important program for senior artisans and the community.

The Assistance League of Albuquerque has operated the Blue Portal as a philanthropic program to showcase the work of senior artisans since October 1978. It is a 100-percent volunteer-run arts and crafts gallery that returns 100% of the price of the items it sells to the senior artisans who create them and has returned more than $3 million to its artisans over the years.

The Blue Portal, known as one of the prime places to shop for gifts in Albuquerque Old Town, attracts both locals and tourists. It provides a unique outlet for more than 400 senior crafters and artists to show and sell their work to supplement their income.

Since its inception, the Blue Portal has enjoyed participation from more than 6,000 senior artisans, averaging about 600 artisans a year.

It recently underwent a major renovation to make sure the historic building where it is housed is structurally sound and remains a unique attraction in Old Town for many, many decades to come. It was also recently named the Best Gift Shop in Albuquerque by Trip Advisor and has earned a 5-star rating on YELP.
