BernCo Board Honors Mark Twain Elementary for Integrated Learning Project

On March 12, 2019, the Bernalillo County Commission honored Mark Twain Elementary educators for the outstanding work and dedication to the teaching and mentoring of neighborhood children and collaboration of young and experienced alike to improve the communities of Alvarado Park, Mark Twain, Mile-Hi and Fair West.

The Alvarado Park, Mark Twain, Mile-Hi and Fair West neighborhoods grant proposal during the fiscal year 2018 program was, without exception, the most ambitious, involved, and most interesting in scope and participation of all the proposals received. The project, entitled Design Education – A New Model for Integrated Learning, ran from November 2017 through May 2018 and involved more than 200 neighbors ranging from second graders to PhDs and representing Alvarado Park, Mark Twain, Mile-Hi and Fair West neighborhoods.

The project took 120 students from Mark Twain Elementary School, grades 2 through 5 and immersed them in architecture projects with integrated curriculum, which combined science, technology, engineering, art, architecture, and math. Working with the students were five Mark Twain teachers and 13 volunteer professional architects. The program was co-sponsored by the American Institute of Architects, Albuquerque Chapter and the School Zone Institute Architecture and Children program.

In six months, the kids learned about organizing a project, from the thought process to design to models. They also learned analysis, model planning and building and even how it feels to be a building. Once the designs and models were finished, a final exhibition was held at the UNM School of Architecture and Planning to which the neighborhood community and general public were invited.

It is with great appreciation and honor that we thank you and acknowledge your public service to your neighborhoods, community, and most of all, the future and education of the children of Bernalillo County’s Mark Twain Elementary School.

This was indeed a gift of time and a labor of love!
