ABC Community School Partnership to be Featured in Washington D.C.

On Sept. 25, the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Community School Partnership will be featured at a Congressional briefing at the United States Capitol in Washington D.C sponsored by Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown.

ABC Community School Partnership manager Deanna Creighton Cook will be part of a panel speaking about the findings of a new return on investment report that shows a $7.11 financial return on investment for every dollar invested in a community school coordinator. That is $7.11 of direct benefits in the form of actual grant dollars, volunteer hours, professional time, programs and in-kind services such as materials, supplies and other physical donations – all provided to students, families and communities at no cost to a school district.

A short impact video featuring the ABC Partnership and its benefits to school and their communities, including students, families and the larger community will also be part of the presentation.

The ABC Community School Partnership was founded in 2007 and is a partnership between Bernalillo County, the City of Albuquerque, Albuquerque Public Schools and a number of business and other organizations. There are currently 33 schools in the ABC Community Schools Partnership Community School Network, and the model is expanding across the state of New Mexico.

The ABC Community School Partnership believes that all students will graduate ready for college, career and life. The partnership aims to ensure this by transforming all schools into community schools - schools that support the whole child, family, school and community.

“Leveraging existing resources to both address needs and build on community assets is a core tenet of the community school strategy,” says County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins, chair of the ABC Community School Partnership Board. “The investment in a community school coordinator provides a key resource in a school to ensure that the right programs and services connect with the people that need them most. That coordination leads to more efficient and effective use of resources and supports sustainability which in turn leads to exponential growth in resources available to students and families.”

The ABC Community School Partnership has received national recognition for its programs, including the Homework Diner program, which brings students, parents and teachers together to work on class assignments at school over a free evening meal.
