About the Property

In 2017, Bernalillo County Open Space adopted a portion of the Tijeras Creek from the Public Works Department. This 11.3-acre property right below A. Montoya Elementary School includes the Tijeras Creek Remediation project and demonstration site, a 17-year project that is 1.5 acres within the Open Space property. The water that runs through the site comes from many sources, including the Sandia Mountains and the A Montoya Elementary campus, that flows into the Albuquerque Basin to recharge the local aquifer. As both a conservation and educational site, it showcases innovative techniques for slowing, storing, and filtering rainwater while promoting biodiversity through planting native riparian species and removal of invasive species. Cleanup/restoration days as well as educational workshops are held at the site alongside the Rocky Mountain Youth crew and the Talking Talons Youth Leadership.

Planning and Management

Over the summer of 2019, BernCo Open Space sponsored an ecological monitoring study. The study involved local scientists and a Rocky Mountain Youth crew, through Talking Talons Youth Leadership, to collect baseline data of the site. With this information, Bernalillo County will be able to track the impact of future remediation efforts in the riparian area. Working with the Tijeras Creek Watershed Collaborative, the County is joining forces with numerous groups and agencies to expand the remediation site that includes soil erosion mitigation through permaculture techniques as well as removal of invasive species and planting native plants.
